ABSTRACT:
The objective of the experiment was to study the relationship between the feeding technique in gestation and behaviour patterns of group–housed sows fed with an electronic feeder (AKB). Sows were divided into two groups fed either simple (daily amount of feed given was the same throughout gestation) or difficult (daily amount of feed given varied according a pregnancy period) feeding system. Electronic feeder was available from 1:30 to 20:30. Increased activity of sows of both of the groups was recorded shortly before the feeder was opened and lasted approximately until 11:30 – 12:00. It is possible to say that older and heavier animals, it is high–ranking sows, visited the feeder first. Frequency of visit of AKB showed little variability for sows fed according to difficult feeding system throughout gestation compared to group fed with simple feeding system. Number of visits of AKB decreased quadratically in dependence on the pregnancy period. The major part of animals in both of the groups attended feeder maximally three times and only a small part of them more frequently. Number of visits of AKB decreased quadratically with parity number for both of the group.
